Vortex Pottery announces Intertwined, an exhibition by our Artist-In-Residence, Garima Tripathi. Intertwined is an exhibition of sculptural ceramics of a 250-year-old Banyan (Fig) tree in the artist’s hometown in India, intertwined with Indian community cooking pots.
The show runs from February 1, 2025, to February 28, 2025, at Vortex Pottery, 517 Aloha Street, Seattle 98109
The sculptural ceramics reflect on sections of the Manjhi Banyan inside large Indian cooking pots such as Patila (Large Cook Pot) or Kadai (Wok). Traditionally, these utensils have been used for community cooking by male cooks who are always hired and paid for the job in contrast to the women who continue to nourish their families through unseen reproductive labour.
The juxtaposition of non-hierarchal, expansive and forest-like forms of the Banyan tree inside such vessels is to examine the relationship between gender, nature and nourishment.
The exhibition opens on February 1 with a reception from 5:00 -8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
