Art Rising is about interaction. We expect Art Rising to give artists and the people who support them an opportunity to come together, create art together, and build something new together. Attendees aren’t just spectators-they’re encouraged to move a piece of an installation, take away an element, climb to the top of the art, or snap a photo of it. Art Rising should feel accessible yet offbeat, welcoming yet innovative. The goal is to create opportunities for connections between attendees, artists, and the art itself. And it all happens in South Lake Union, reflecting the contours of this rapidly evolving neighborhood.
Eligibility: Open to all artists living in the Pacific Northwest

Deadline: Submission application is open on a rolling basis until we have reached our artist capacity. Apply now!

Compensation: Artists are welcome to find sponsors and/or promote themselves. Participating artists will be promoted through event-related channels. Participation is free, and tented space is provided. No application fee.

      Event Location

Art Rising will take place on Saturday, September 17th, 10:00am-5:00pm along 9th Ave N in South Lake Union, between Republican and Thomas Streets. The street will be lined with 30 art installation spaces and 30 booths programmed by Urban Craft Uprising.

The event will overlap with the South Lake Union Saturday Market, 10am-3pm, happening on 9th Ave N between Denny Way and John St. Other programming elements of the event include: School of Visual Concepts Wayzgoose Event, 10am-4pm; Black Box Festival (exact venues TBD); walking tours of Shunpike’s Storefronts Seattle installations; and walking tours lead by the Seattle Architecture Foundation. We anticipate pop-up performances and additional programming.

Artists will have a 10×10 tented space to activate with participant-focused installations and projects. Our selection jury is looking for unique, creative ideas that encourage attendees to interact with the art. This may include, but is not limited to the ability to add to a piece or installation, the ability to move pieces, a take-away part, climbing on the art, unique photo opportunities, etc.

      Additional Requirements:

Each installation must designate one person to be the lead and main point of contact for the duration of the event on 9/17. Art must be delivered, installed, maintained, and manned at all times by the artist or art group.

The art installation does not have to be previously built. If you have an idea to create a piece of art and would like to apply to showcase your work, please do!

      Only one installation per application.

Art Rising is open to both emerging and established artists.

      Artist Selection Process:

The artists for this event will be selected through this call to artists. The Art Rising jury will choose   participants based on the quality of work and creativity in the submitted materials and the proposed design, visual and technical sophistication, the ability to produce interactive outdoor art, and proven ability to coordinate and collaborate with project managers, events professionals and community stakeholders.

      SCHEDULE:

August 1: Call to Artists opens
August 26: Marketing/Press materials due: in progress photos, artist bios, updated project descriptions
September 1: Artist Submission closes (or sooner if capacity is met). Participants will be notified of their selection on a rolling basis as applications are recieved.
