CALL TO ARTISTS – This Art Life: Inventing Your Path
DEADLINE: February 2, 2025
Schack Art Center is seeking a small number of artists for a very special educational exhibit opening in March, 2025. This Art Life: Inventing Your Path will present a sweeping survey of possible careers in the visual arts and provide a deep dive into a few of those creative career pathways through the eyes and art of real artists in Washington State.
This will be our annual Arts Education in Action Exhibition for 2025. Each year our AEA Exhibitions bring thousands of Snohomish County K-12 students to the Schack to be immersed in the gallery experience. Students receive a docent-led tour through the exhibit, watch live glassblowing at our Hot Shop window, watch exhibit-specific demonstrations by local artists, and participate in an art activity related to the exhibit.
We are seeking exhibiting artists in creative careers, including but not limited to: illustration; fashion design; theater set design; architecture; mural painting and design; comic art, graphic novels, product design; handmade maker goods; fine art; video game design; toy design; art conservation; cake decorating: food styling; special effects for TV/film; environmental design; interior design; advertising; gallery/museum work; photography/videography; comic art; filmmaking; costume design; makeup for film/theater; animation; jewelry design; web design, and more!
EXHIBITION will be comprised of vignettes of each artist, consisting of:
1: A final artwork (1 piece). Can be 2D (wall), 3D (pedestal), video ( Schack will provide monitor w/USB port).
2: A display of the process involved in creating it, including o real pieces in different phases of completion (2-5 “step” pieces ideally) and o images/photos of process (up to 8 photos showing processes in action). For final installation I will have these photos printed and mounted on foam core.
3: Examples of inspirations or motivations that led to that artwork, providing a glimpse into their artist life. (This will look different for each artist; submit ideas for this, realizing space/time constraints).
4: Artists are also asked to provide a written description of one of the hidden or seldom-seen components of the Art Life, such as: their daily routine, budgeting, marketing, finding their artist voice, finding community, augmenting growth, challenging themselves, continuing education.
5: A written synopsis of the path they followed to arrive at this point, to be provided after acceptance.
Artists may additionally provide a concise video (5 min. max) introducing themselves and summing up their artist path to the present, showing their processes, to be linked via QR code in the exhibit, and/or on gallery video loop.
