The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS), in partnership with Seattle City Light (SCL), will commission one artist/artist team to serve as an artist-in-residence for the development of an Arts Master Plan. During the residency, the artist will work with SCL staff to research and investigate the work of SCL in order to create a master plan that will guide and inform future public art commissions. This plan will create a robust, cohesive long-range vision for how SCL’s 1% for art funding will connect with community members, provide support to the arts community, and reflect the mission, vision, values and Race and Social Justice goals of SCL.
The artist/artist team will develop the master plan in two phases. The first phase will consist of conducting research and compiling information with the help of an SCL staff project team. The second phase will include the writing, designing, and review/revision of the master plan for publication and distribution. The master plan will serve as a roadmap to SCL and ARTS staff to provide input into decision making for future 1% for art projects and develop a suggested methodology for coordination.
Eligibility:
This opportunity is open to artists based in the United States, with the expectation that an agreed percentage of residency time will be in Seattle (determined and based upon future Public Health advisory guidelines) with the remaining residency work to be conducted remotely. Artist teams of no more than two people are eligible to apply if the team is able to show evidence of past collaborative work. Students are not eligible for this opportunity.
The Office of Arts & Culture encourages diversity in its collection. Artists whose work is well represented in the City’s collection are eligible to apply, while the artist selection panel will consider artistic diversity as one factor in the selection process.
Budget:
The artist budget for this project is $75,000. The artist/artist team will receive $30,000 for Phase I, the initial six months of the residency. An additional $15,000 is designated as a support budget for programming/projects implemented during Phase I. The artist/artist team will receive $30,000 for Phase II, which includes art master plan development, design, printing, and delivery, as well as the continuation of the residency for approximately six to nine months.
All project fees are inclusive of travel expenses, taxes and other project costs. Current Washington State sales/use tax rates apply to all artist contracts issued during the project, regardless of where the artist resides.
