During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. Often, work created in the studio can lack the energy of paintings created outdoors from direct observation. However, the time constraints of working only from life generally limit’s the design, finish, and size of a plein air piece compared to studio work. The focus of this class will be the process of taking information from both life studies and photographs and combining them into authentic, fully realized, studio paintings – bringing the best in both worlds together. TJ will give daily demonstrations and individual attention to each student over this four day workshop. We will spend most of the time outdoors painting Whidbey Island Barns en plein air then finish the paintings in the studio.
This class will cover:
- The basic elements of the landscape
- How to compose a landscape both in the field and in the studio
- A process for mixing and matching color
- The skillful use of photographs in studio work (How to make them help and not hurt your finished work)
This four-day class, held September 9 to 12, 2017, is open to all levels. Cost is $550.
