      Date: July 28 – 31

      Tuition: $700 + model fee

      Skill level: all levels

In this four day workshop students will learn the key elements that go into creating one of Timothy Rees’s dynamic colorful figure paintings. Topics include research, concept, dress design, and the process of execution.  When painting the figure in the custom designed dress, students will combine classical realistic techniques with modern day bravura and abstraction to produce a fresh work of creative realism.

      Syllabus:

Day One.  Research, Design, and Dress Creation, Color sketch.

Students will look through historical references of figure paintings, while considering the model, to come up with ideas for compositions and dress design and sketch them out. Students can then try their hand at using provided fabric to create a simple dress creation on the model.  After lunch, students will watch a demonstration on, then make, a color sketch to capture spontaneous observations, bravura, and color harmony from the same pose as the instructor.

      Day Two. Painting the portrait

After blocking in the painting design, students will spend the day painting the head of the model.

Day Three.  Students will paint the rest of the exposed figure (hands, arms, etc)

Day Four.  Guided by the color sketch and the model, students will complete their painting, integrating the design of the background and dress with the realism of the figure.
